ISU Honor Highlights Melaleuca’s Distinct Business Model and Lasting Impact
When Idaho State University announced it would award Melaleuca Founder and Executive Chairman Frank VanderSloot an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, the recognition pointed to something larger than one entrepreneur’s career milestone.
It also reflected genuine interest in the company he built, the products Melaleuca has created and brought to market, and the distinct business model the company has refined over four decades.
In its announcement, Idaho State University described VanderSloot as a leader who built Melaleuca into “a leading online retailer of natural health, home and personal care products with a worldwide presence.” The university also noted Melaleuca’s long-standing mission “to enhance the lives of those we touch by helping people reach their goals.”
That mission has guided Melaleuca since its founding in Idaho Falls in 1985 and continues to shape how the company serves customers today.
“It can’t be about the money. It has to be about improving lives,” VanderSloot said in remarks shared by Idaho State University. “We built a model where the best producer wins. The hardest worker wins. And no one loses.”
A Company Built Around Customers

Melaleuca’s growth has always been tied to wellness-minded customers who purchase products they use in their homes every month.
Rather than relying on traditional retail shelves, Melaleuca serves customers directly through an online shopping club that offers wellness, nutrition, personal care, home cleaning, and other everyday products. Melaleuca’s Consumer Direct Marketing® approach connects customers with products they value while allowing Marketing Executives to introduce others to Melaleuca through personal referrals.
Idaho State University’s article described the model as “a unique direct referral marketing approach” in which people can work hard and achieve their goals. The university also noted that, unlike a multi-level marketing approach, “there is no investment or inventory required” and that Melaleuca Members refer customers to products purchased from the company itself.
That distinction is central to Melaleuca’s story. The company’s growth begins with products, not inventory. Customers are not asked to buy products to resell. They shop for health, wellness, home, and personal care products they use themselves, and that product experience is what gives Melaleuca’s model its strength.
As VanderSloot has explained, most Members did not come to Melaleuca because they were looking for a business opportunity. “They joined us just because they wanted our superior products,” he has said.
More than 81% of Members are simply product users, and more than 96% of Members shop with Melaleuca again the following month.
For business faculty studying entrepreneurial models, customer behavior, product loyalty, and consistent growth, those numbers help explain why Melaleuca’s model is notable: the company has created and manufactured products that earn a place in customers’ regular shopping routines. For those who also choose to build a Melaleuca referral business, the opportunity begins the same way. They are customers first, personally using the products and sharing them through their own experience.
Recognition From a Respected University

Idaho State University awarded VanderSloot the honorary doctorate during its Spring 2026 commencement ceremonies on May 9 at the ICCU Dome in Pocatello.
The university recognized VanderSloot’s decades of business leadership, company growth, philanthropy, workforce development, and community impact. EastIdahoNews.com reported that VanderSloot was honored for four decades of leadership and service, including Melaleuca’s growth into a global business serving millions of households and employing thousands of people in countries around the world.
“Frank VanderSloot’s entrepreneurial vision, commitment to philanthropy, and longstanding investment in the people and communities of Idaho have made a lasting impact across our state and beyond,” said Idaho State University President Robert Wagner, according to EastIdahoNews.com. “We were proud to recognize his achievements and service with this honorary degree, and we were honored to welcome him, his wife Belinda, and his family as part of Idaho State University’s commencement celebration.”
For Melaleuca, the recognition is meaningful not only because it honors VanderSloot, but because it reflects the broader impact of a company long built on customer value, opportunity, and service.
ISU’s announcement did not focus only on revenue or company size. It emphasized hard work, perseverance, leadership, charitable giving, and the idea that success should be measured by the lives it improves.
That message closely aligns with Melaleuca’s mission and the principles that have shaped the company for more than 40 years.
A Broader Story of Leadership and Service
Under VanderSloot’s leadership, Melaleuca has grown from a small Idaho Falls company into a global wellness enterprise. Its products now reach customers in 19 countries, and the company has become one of Idaho’s largest private employers.
Melaleuca’s impact extends beyond business growth. Through the Melaleuca Foundation, the company and its Team Members have supported disaster relief, hunger relief, education, veterans, soldiers, first responders, and humanitarian efforts around the world.

Idaho State University highlighted that same spirit of service in its announcement, noting that Melaleuca’s charitable work has raised millions of dollars to help those in need.
For VanderSloot, that service-minded approach is connected to the same philosophy that shaped Melaleuca’s business model from the beginning. Business success matters most when it helps people improve their lives.

Idaho State University’s honorary doctorate recognizes Frank VanderSloot’s leadership, but it also points to the principles that have guided Melaleuca from the beginning.
A business should create value. It should reward hard work. It should serve customers well. It should help people reach their goals. And it should improve lives.
That is the story behind Melaleuca’s growth. It is also why ISU’s recognition matters beyond one commencement ceremony.
The honor reflects a career of leadership and service, while also highlighting the distinct business philosophy that continues to guide Melaleuca today.
